Beach Rocks & Seascapes

As a child I always looked forward to “summertime” with thoughts of spending time at the beach…Watching with anticipation as the waves crashed on shore, one after another… Feeling the white beach sand as it warmed my toes and the ocean surf as it sprayed coolness over my tiny body… Collecting treasures presented to me by the tides.  As an adult I now enjoy walking the beach remembering those carefree times.  Picking up my collections of iridescent, wet gemstones and porcelain shells, I relish their weight in my hands.  Always I am fascinated as I watch my wet treasures dry up and turn into ordinary beach rocks and seashells.

As an artist I often draw my inspiration from these same seashore experiences...The crashing surf with water droplets suspended midair over rocks...The moody sea with its continuously changing colors...My precious stones and shells. These are the things that call me away from everyday tasks to work instead with paint, ink, and paper.  Sometimes I find the process exhilarating and sometimes completely frustrating.  I especially enjoy spending time slowly layering my watercolors on paper, and then watching as, much to my surprise, beach stones begin to appear. Much time is then necessary to erase, scratch, recolor, and rearrange my stones until I can finally “feel” their weight in my hands. My artwork has given me a delightful opportunity to recapture some of my best childhood memories.

Perhaps you may find in perusing my beach rocks and seascapes that you might find yourself remembering some of your childhood memories of the wonders of nature.

Beach Rocks Revisited

My “Beach Rocks Revisited” series began in 1997 with a drawing inspired by a trip I had recently taken to the beaches of Nova Scotia. This drawing entitled “Beach Rocks” was worked in pen & ink, a tedious and time-consuming fine art process.

In 2013, wanting to make improvements to the original, I reworked a copy of “Beach Rocks” again in pen & ink to create a second piece, “Beach Rocks Revisited”. I was pleased with the results and decided to add color to the copies by experimenting with a little-used set of watercolor pencils which had been given to me as a gift. I was delighted to watch as my black & white stones came alive with color, each print originally colored and subtly different from the last.

My third piece resulted from an attempt to create subtle, heart-shaped changes in the rocks for a Valentine’s Day card.
The result became
“Beach Rocks Revisited:  Love & Strength in Stone” (2013).

Being happy with  the creation of “Beach Rocks Revisited”,  and having just received a beautiful close-up photo of a dragonfly taken by a friend, Lyn Rockwell, I decided to rework  a copy of “Beach Rocks Revisited” in pen and & ink again and add a dragonfly. Adding water color paint along with watercolor pencils to the pen & ink prints brought the dragonfly to life in the fourth piece “Life Lighting on Beach Rocks Revisited” (2014).

The fifth piece in the series is entitled “Meandering through Beach Rocks Revisited”.  I added a mixture of watercolor and acrylic paint to a black and white copy of “ Beach Rocks Revisited” creating paths of water trickling through the rocks and tumbling out at the bottom edge of the painting.

The prints of “Beach Rocks Revisited” and “Life Lighting on Beach Rocks Revisited” are all hand-colored and have been signed and numbered.  I hope you enjoy viewing my beach rocks as much as I enjoyed the process of creating them.

With an old fashioned look,
“MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL” seems to be questioning just who it is that is making this Christmas Eve delivery. This card is a hand-colored, modified print of one of my original pen & ink drawings,  "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”.

The original is part of an art exhibit entitled “The Road Not Taken”,  and was inspired by the poetry of Robert Frost. Currently the exhibit is on tour throughout NH at public libraries, nature centers, and community venues. For information on this exhibit go to "Touring Exhibit" on the menu.

“Dusting of Snow”
is a modified print of one of my original paintings entitled “Round and Red”. After making a copy of the original, I used acrylic paint to “winterize” the print with a “dusting of snow”.

“Home for The Holidays” has been adapted from an original pen & ink house portrait of my childhood home in Kingston, Mass.   The house was built sturdy and strong by my Dad, and over the years it has seen many a Christmas come and go.... And many a fond family memory shared.

While remodeling his 1790's home in Wolfeboro, NH, my brother-in-law, Bill, found a cloth bell hidden, or perhaps lost, behind the horsehair plaster of the interior walls.
My family likes to imagine that some unknown young lady spent many long, snowy, winter hours in the 18th century, diligently practicing her stitching skills on this canvas bell while her new home was slowly being built. Purposefully placed in the wall by her proud parents for later generations to find ? Or maybe, surreptitiously deposited into the wall by the family cat?
We don’t know.

After many years of solitary confinement, the bell now proudly hangs each year on the family Christmas tree. A print of the imagined, young lady’s artistic handiwork is memorialized on this card and in a short essay, “Ellen’s Bell”, written by my sister, Celia.
